Don Burke eat your heart out

We have planted these babies and I cannot wait to eat them with some fresh basil and olive oil. Yum! (source)
My dad is Don Burke's long lost brother. Seriously, the man has a serious case of the green thumb.  His backyard has an impressive vegetable garden and array of fruit trees.  He has a mini vineyard going on such is his prowess.

You know how they say girls always marry their father?  Well, I can't say that my dad and the hubs are similar in many ways, but the green thumb thing? They are total twins. Well, ok the hubs has a way to go before he reaches the gardening prowess of my dad, but he is on his way my friends, he is on his way.

I was out in the garden this morning doing some weeding (never has a sentence made me feel more grown up) and I was just awestruck by how great our vegetable garden is going to be this summer.  We have basil, tomatoes, rockmelon, squash, zucchini, lettuce, celery, asparagus, capsicum, corn and cucumber all growing perfectly in our vegie patch.  These were planted by the hubs about a month ago and so far they are all thriving.  He takes care of them so beautifully, watering, fertilising, pruning and weeding regularly.

In fact, as I was weeding, I realised that there are at least 20 or 30 basil & tomato plants that have sprouted independently due to the awesomeness of the compost that the hubs used when planting our summer crop. We are big on composting around these parts.

Now to get the hubs to pull out the excess plants and gift them to others so they don't go to waste. Anyone need some tomato or basil plants?

  1. I'm so jealous of your garden. My veggie patch is approx 2mx1m. It fits a tomato, some lemon grass and some lettuce and that is it. I've squeezed herbs and a lemon tree into pots but I crave a big veggie patch - enjoy!

P.S. Saying I did the weeding or mowed the lawn makes me feel totally grown up too.

  2. Lisa you sound like you're ding great given the limited space! It can actually be stressful having so many veggies sometimes, because we cannot eat them quickly enough and run out of people to give them to. Move to Sydney & I'll hook you up!
