I have noticed a trend among many of the bloggers I follow lately. They all seem to be giving up sugar. Sugar free seems to be a new way of life for so many people out there.
I am going to confess, I just don't get it.
I have never understood these kind of diets. Look, I know that part of the problem is that there is lots of hidden sugar in lots of the food people are eating & we all know too much sugar is bad for you.
However, I still think that if you follow a diet where not only is the food as close to the way nature intended it as possible AND of course in moderation, you don't have to go on some radical diet to attain a healthier lifestyle.
As I type this I am eating choc chip banana bread. However, it is home made. I know exactly how much sugar is in it because I added it to the bread myself.
I don't buy processed foods for our family. We don't have chips or junk food in the pantry for me to grab when I'm feeling like a snack. Nuts, fruit or some yoghurt? Sure.
I am no earth mother type but I have also never given any of my babies pre prepared baby food. I like making it myself (and it is hardly difficult to mush up veggies or fruit for a baby) as I know exactly what is and isn't in there.
I guess I just don't understand how the simple fact of eating and enjoying food became so hard?

I totally agree!!!! Why has eating healthily become so difficult??
ReplyDeleteI think it is just as easy to grab, fruit or vege, yoghurt etc than it is junk food!
I don't buy junk food as a rule and I was very strict when the kids were younger. I allow sweets now and then but it's mostly fruit and yoghurt. BUT, I did give up sugar myself at the start of this year after finding myself unheathily craving it every hour or so. So I went cold turkey on sugar, caffeine and diet drinks. Last four months. Felt a bit better. Lost 4kg and then plateaued. But it wasn't worth it. I felt like I had to be so restrictive with everything I ate. So I am back where I was, in moderation. A life without sugar is a life half lived.. in my opinion anyway..!
ReplyDeleteI should clarify, I buy junk food for myself a lot!! But not for the kids..
ReplyDeleteI agree a life without sugar is only half a lived! If you are educated about food then you have the responsibility of making good choices about what you put in your body without ruling out sugar or carbs completely.
ReplyDeleteMy kids think it is Xmas if they are allowed to have juice!
I'm the same! I can't NOT eat sugar. I love chocolate and find that if I have a bit of dark chocolate the craving subsides. I to make all of Little Miss L's food, but I do like the Rafferty's pouches for when we're out and about :)
ReplyDeleteCath, I always used to bring avocado or a banana when baby D was younger but these days he can eat sandwiches which makes it much easier when we're out and about!
ReplyDeleteHello there thanks for dropping by.Was lucky with that petticoat I have a couple vintage ones but this is the 1st bright coloured one so far.I really want to try makng some so stay tuned if you like.Oh and they have some new ones on ebay made in China very pretty but it is so much more fun to find them dont you think?
ReplyDeleteAm off to read your blog now xx
Aneets, totally random, but my polka dot dress is on sale: http://www.daddyos.com/specials/specials.html
ReplyDeleteI think the approach to food by many (Specifically, bloggers) at the moment is just insane... I can understand the movement away from processed foods, but at the same time, think it's over the top... and then also, nothing new and exciting. Homemade food is what I was brought up on - packaged foods were limited. Suddenly all these "earth mother" types think they've discovered something new and exciting. Bit of a pet peeve I must say! (Along with bunting at birthday parties and paying someone to make an expensive cake for a child's birthday, when it should be the job of mum to make a fairly crappy caterpillar or the like!)
ReplyDeleteI can go on and on forever on my bandwagon if you like?
;p
Oh Alycia I need to blog about bunting! WTF is with the bunting obsession?
ReplyDeleteI think people just make things so hard for themselves, everything seems so 'styled' these days.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh totally!!!!!!!!!!!! It's pathetic - and the joy of childhood seems to have been stolen away!!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Aneets. If it's not no sugar, it's no dairy or no carbs - and most of the time for no reason!
ReplyDeletePlease blog about bunting. A friend of mine made bunting for our mutual friend's 37th birthday. WTF?
You need to do a blog about green smoothies too!
